Bio

Here’s a guy who could be one of the unsung leaders for the Golden Eagles in his senior season...projected as the starter at left tackle and one of the most experienced players in the offensive line...showed his diligent work ethic throughout the 2013 season and continued that during the 2014 spring drills, which culminated in his winning the Dog Dagget Most Improved Player Award from the coaching staff....originally an offensive lineman, he was moved across the line to the defense and saw limited action...moved back to offense last year and really started to shine late in the year...has worked hard to increase his size and strength...included on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in several semesters.

AT TECH (IN 2013): Matthew returned to the offensive side of scrimmage and played in six games, earning a spot as a starter in the final three games.

(IN 2012): Matthew moved to the defensive line and appeared in four games...did not compile any stats.

(IN 2011): Saw action against Maryville College in Tech’s home opener.

(IN 2010): Matt was on the roster and worked on the scout team during his first year while taking a redshirt season.

HIGH SCHOOL: A four-year letterwinner on the football field at North Clayton (Ga.) High School for coach Rodney Hackney...was putting up big numbers for the Eagles through the first five games of his senior season before a knee injury cut his prep career short...helped the team go 4-1 through the early part of the schedule before finishing 10-3 and going three rounds into the state 4-AAAA playoffs...he accounted for 46 total tackles and five tackles-for-loss in his five contests.

PERSONAL: The son of Paul and Amelia Smith...birthdate is November 24, 1991...full name is Matthew Ellis Smith...majoring in interdisciplinary studies.
