Bio
Matt Stark was a four-time first-team rifle All-American and a member of Tennessee Tech’s first NCAA National Championship rifle team. Stark’s selection completed an unprecedented sweep into the Hall of Fame for the 1980 NCAA national champions. He joined teammates and inductees Elaine Proffitt, Kurt Fitz-Randolph and Rod Fitz-Randolph, as well as coach Jim Newkirk.
Stark was a major contributor toward Tech winning six national championships prior to the NCAA title in 1980. He helped Golden Eagleye teams claim National Rifle Association and International Shooters Union titles in 1977, 1978 and 1979.
A team captain in his final two seasons, Stark earned All-America honors in smallbore all four years of his Tech career, and also claimed air rifle All-America in 1979 and 1980 giving him a total of six All-America honors.
Individually, Stark placed third at the national championships in 1977 and fourth in 1979. He Earned two Distinguished Expert medals from the NRA for prone and 3-position shooting. He competed in the National Sports Festival in 1978, and was selected as a member of the U.S. Shooting Team each year from 1976 through 1979.
Also a strong student, Stark received the Faculty Scholarship Award in the College of Business Administration, posting the highest senior grade average in the college at 3.98.
