CHARLESTON, Ill. – For the second straight contest, defense was the theme of the day for the Tennessee Tech soccer team, as the Golden Eagles fought to a scoreless, nil-nil draw at Eastern Illinois Sunday afternoon.
Tech (6-4-3, 3-1-3) matched its 0-0 performance from Friday night at SIUE against the Panthers (5-9-2, 0-6-1), collecting its third tie of the season and second straight. The Golden Eagles also ran their unbeaten streak to six straight matches, earning a 3-0-3 mark since dropping its Ohio Valley Conference opener at Jacksonville State.
Goalkeeper Kari Naerdemann and the Tech defense registered their seventh shutout of the season in the contest, the most in the league. Naerdemann made saves on both shots on goal by the Panther offense while the Golden Eagle defense kept the home team's scoring chances to a minimum. In fact, Eastern Illinois mustered just five total shots in the 110-minute contest.
Offensively, Tech put together a strong attack, posting 18 total shots, including eight on goal. EIU's Sara Teteak kept the Golden Eagles from finding the back of the net, however, making a big save in each overtime period.
Dani Shartouny forced three shots on goal to lead the Tech offensive attack while Nora Vicsek unleashed four total shot attempts. Seven Golden Eagles played each and every minute of the double-overtime match, including Naerdemann, Karigan Owens, Molly Kafader, Lauren Brewer, Tina Marolt, Mary Francis Hoots and Rachel Blow.
The Golden Eagles will return to Cookeville and Tech Soccer Field for their final three matches of the regular season, playing host to Morehead State Friday, Oct. 13, first-place Eastern Kentucky Sunday, Oct. 15 and UT Martin Sunday, Oct. 22. Tech's match-up with Morehead State is set for a 3:00 p.m. CT kick off.
