Skyhawks spoil Tech's bid to stay alive in tourney hunt

Golden Eagles conclude season at SEMO Sunday

MARTIN, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech couldn't deliver a much-needed victory on the road at UT Martin Friday, falling 2-0 in its next-to-last match of the season.

The Golden Eagles came into weekend needing to win two games on the road to play in the postseason, and with Friday's loss were eliminated from contention for a spot in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.

Coming off a bye week, Tech was hoping to roll with the momentum of a 1-0 overtime victory over Austin Peay on Senior Day in its last outing but the host Skyhawks had other plans.

UT Martin got on the board in the 37th minute of action when Abi Sanvee shook her defender and scored off a pass from Kendyl Wilson on the right side. The 1-0 score stood deep into the second half before Camilla Buoni gave the Skyhawks some cushion in the 85th minute, scoring an unassisted goal on a long run.

Tech fired eight shots on the afternoon and put five on target, getting shots on goal from Leigh Heffner, Sarah Gawthrop, Emily Homan, Kris Cambron and Kerri Reid. UT Martin took 22 shots and placed eight on goal, also winning five corner kicks.

Golden Eagle goalkeeper Becca Toler collected six saves for the match while UTM's Mariah Klenke notched five.

With the loss, Tech falls to 5-12-1 on the season and in the OVC while the Skyhawks improve to 10-6-2 and 4-3-1 in league play.

The Golden Eagles play their final game of the 2011 season Sunday at league-leading Southeast Missouri. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
