Tech is tested on the road, Golden Eagles outscored 2-1 by UTC

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – With just one day of rest after playing Auburn University on the road, the Golden Eagles went head to head against the UTC Mocs this afternoon on their return trip to Cookeville.

The final score of the game favored the Mocs, who rallied for a 2-1 victory, but was not indicative of the intensity and dynamics of the contest. TTU seized control of the game and maintained possession for most of the first half, allowing the Mocs only one shot in comparison to Tech’s three.

One of those three shots fell on net as sophomore Andrea Meloff put Tech on the board first in the 30th minute of the match when she lofted a shot over UTC keeper Taylor Davidson for her first goal of the season. Freshman Ellie Iaciofano was credited with the assist for her first career point.

Tech outshot UTC in the second half as well, eight shots to six, and put six shots on goal over the course of the game compared to the Mocs’ four. However, UTC tied the game at one all in the 57th minute when freshman Kerbi Towry headed a cross by sophomore teammate Kelsey Swann from the right side of the field. The goal evened the match and also marked Towry’s first career goal.

A penalty in the 74th minute was the back-breaker for TTU, when keeper Megan Polk mistook a pass from a teammate and picked it up. The resultant indirect kick for UTC was taken by Anna Cusick, who touched the ball to Donna-Kay Henry. Henry ripped a shot over the Tech wall for an upper-90 goal to give the Mocs the lead, and inevitably the win.

Polk logged two saves on the day, while Davidson notched five.

The Golden Eagles will have a week off from competition before hitting the road again to take on MTSU next Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
