ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team came up short
in its match at Winthrop Friday, falling 3-2 after a late
The Golden Eagles (0-2) went into halftime tied 1-1, with a group of players kicking in Tech's first half goal. Winthrop (1-0) looked to be in control early in the second half, adding two goals in the first ten minutes.
But Tech settled down, and late in the second half, sophomore Ashley Smith scored, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Minutes later, she recorded another shot-on-goal, but time ran out before the Golden Eagles could get any closer.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker made 11 saves, as Winthrop out-shot TTU 26-5, including a 14-3 shots-on-goal advantage. Both of Tech's goals were unassisted.
The Golden Eagles wrap up their road trip Sunday with a match at Charlotte, before coming home for a pair of games against Appalachian State on Sept. 5, and Vanderbilt on Sept. 7. Admission to Tech's home soccer matches is free.
