COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team travels to
Atlanta this weekend to begin the 2008 regular season against
Georgia State on Saturday.
This year's team played together for the first time on Aug 19, in
an exhibition match against Carson-Newman.
Week No. 1 Team Notes (PDF) Sophomore Brooke Mayo scored the lone
Tech goal in the exhibition, but the Golden Eagles fell short in a
2-1 loss when Carson-Newman's Morgan Gruenenfelder scored her
second goal with 35 seconds left.
On Thursday, Tech announced its 2008 team captains, with seniors
Brianne Lankford and Katie Morrissey, and sophomore Taren Brown
earning the honors.
Lankford, a defender from Knoxville, made eight starts in 2007, and
had a goal and an assist against UT-Chattanooga. The fifth-year
senior has seen action in 27 career games at Tech.
Morrissey set a career high in shots in 2007 with 20, while
starting 16 games. The senior from Franklin, Texas has five career
goals, including a game-winner, in the 45 matches she's played in
at Tech.
Brown, a defender from Hendersonville, Tenn. started all 18 games
for the Golden Eagles as a freshman in 2007, and was named Golden
Eagle freshman of the year, as well as earning a spot on the OVC
all-newcomer team.
The match against Georgia State kicks off at 1 p.m. on Saturday at
the Panthersville Complex. The Panthers have dominated the all-time
series against Tech, taking all five previous matches. The Panthers
beat Tech 3-2 in 2007. Saturday's match is both teams' season
opener.
