COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – After a quick opening out of the gate Monday night, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles women’s cagers will look to keep things rolling Thursday as they take on the Lady Bisons of Lipscomb.
“Lipscomb is a balanced team that can shoot the three as
well as any team we will face this season,” said head coach
Sytia Messer. “Whenever you play an in-state rival, everyone
steps up their game.”
This will be the third meeting between the Golden Eagles and
the Bison, with Tennessee Tech owning the 2-0 advantage. TTU
defeated Lipscomb, 72-55, in their first meeting during the 2008-09
season, and followed up with a 73-65 victory last season at the
Hoop.
The Golden Eagles enter Thursday’s contest owners of a
1-0 record, with an 82-67 victory over Alabama A&M Monday night
at Eblen Center. Against the Lady Bulldogs, junior Tacarra Hayes
and sophomores Kellie Cook and Tiara Hopper each recorded a
team-high 17 points, with Hayes and Hopper each going 7-of-8 from
the charity stripe.
As a team, Tennessee Tech shot 46 percent from the field and
79.2 percent from the free throw line. The Golden Eagles also
notched 10 steals and dished out 19 helpers, while forcing 16 Lady
Bulldog turnovers.
In their game last season Tennessee Tech won a 73-65 decision
behind a late second half surge keyed by Hayes, who scored 10 of
her 16 points in the final five minutes. Kellie Cook added 14
points while, then sophomore Krystal Stirrup put up nine points and
seven rebounds.
The opening tip against Lipscomb is set for Thursday at 5
p.m., at the Allen Arena, on the Lipscomb campus.
