COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech softball team has picked the right time of the season to string together some victories. Winners of 10 of their last 15 games, the Golden Eagles will begin their quest for a sixth OVC Tournament championship under the direction of head coach Tory Acheson this Thursday against Morehead State.
The game is the first of the three-day, double-elimination OVC Tournament and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Bettye Giles Field in Martin, Tenn.
Tech, which has qualified for the OVC postseason for the 17th consecutive season, will enter the tournament as the sixth seed, while Morehead State is the third seed.
UT Martin and Jacksonville State are the one and two seeds, respectively, and will receive byes in the first round of the tournament. Fourth-seed Eastern Illinois and fifth-seed Murray Still will also play in the first round of the tournament on Thursday beginning at 1:30 p.m.
In last year’s OVC Tournament, Tech was seeded fifth but upset UT Martin and Jacksonville State in back-to-back games to put itself in good position for the weekend. However, the Golden Eagles ran into a speed bump in second-seed Southeast Missouri and eventual champion UT Martin in settling for a third-place finish in the tournament.
The team will look to duplicate its hot start to the tournament again this year against a team that TTU had success against this year. In their road trip to Morehead, Ky., the Golden Eagles won two of three games to take the season series against the Eagles. After falling 6-4 to begin the series, Tech took both ends of a doubleheader, 3-1 and 7-3, to help secure its place in this year’s tournament field.
Tech (25-28, 11-12 OVC) has also historically had success against the team’s in this year’s field. The Golden Eagles are leading the all-time series against five of the six teams in this year’s OVC Tournament. Murray State, in its first-ever season, is the only team to hold a winning record against TTU after taking two of three this season.
Tech is 53-28 all-time against Morehead State, which enters Thursday’s contest with a 27-22 overall record and 14-9 mark in the OVC.
The festivities will begin on Wednesday evening with the OVC Awards Banquet before action kicks off on Thursday.
The entire tourney will be available on OVCSports.tv, and live stats will be available through UT Martin’s Web site, UTMsports.com. Brandon Goodwin will be calling the action on Teamline, a free internet radio service that can be accessed at teamline.cc or by clicking here.
