Tech men finish 17th at Samford Intercollegiate
Golden Eagles will look to rebound at Grover Page Classic on March 12-13
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee Tech completed its first tournament of the 2012 spring season Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 17th at the Samford Intercollegiate at Hoover Country Club.
The Golden Eagles matched their second-round score in Tuesday’s final round, shooting a 316 to complete a 317-316-316=949 showing. Tech finished just seven strokes out of a tie for 15th and eight strokes out of 14th place.
Lee Maxwell paced the Golden Eagles, shooting a final-round 78 to go with a first-round 79 and a second-round 77 to for a score of 234.
Samford, the host squad, shot its worst round of the tournament in the final round but held on to win the event with a score of 291-288-303=882. The Bulldogs’ Casey O’Toole was the medalist, shooting a final-round 72 to go with a 73 and 66 over the first two rounds.
Behind Maxwell, Travis Ramsey was Tech’s second finisher, posting an 80-78-80=238. Tyler Cassetty tied Maxwell for Tech’s low final round and finished third among Golden Eagles with a score of 78-82-78=238.
Greg Kitts was fourth with a score of 80-79-80=239 and Mason Griffin was fifth at 81-87-85=253.
Fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Austin Peay finished in a tie for second place with a team score of 891 to match Davidson. Sam Houston State was fourth at 893 and there was a three-way tie for fifth at 904 between Western Carolina, Winthrop and Belmont.
The rest of the field consisted of Houston Baptist (907), Murray State (912), Eastern Kentucky (917), Air Force (921), Evansville (922), Southern Illinois (926), Illinois State (941), SIU Edwardsville (942), Tennessee-Martin (942), Tennessee Tech (949) and Nicholls State (949).
The men’s golf team returns to action March 12-13 at the Grover Page Classic, hosted by UT Martin and held at Jackson Country Club.
