Kitts places sixth, leads Golden Eagles at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
Golden Eagles place 10th in final fall tournament
SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Greg Kitts followed up a first-round 69 with a one-under-par 71 in Tuesday's final round at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, finishing in sixth place out of 93 individuals.
Behind Kitts' lead, the Golden Eagles held onto to 10th place out of 16 teams in a strong field, concluding their fall season in solid fashion.
As a team, Tech lowered its total by one stroke on Tuesday, following up Monday's 296 with a 295 for a combined score of 591. That one stroke was a crucial one as the Golden Eagles edged out both Wofford and Radford by just one stroke and beat Guilford by two strokes.
Kitts led Tech with a two-day score of 140 and finished two-under-par, followed by Mason Griffin, who shot a 73 on Tuesday to complement Monday's 76 and finish at 149. The rest of the Golden Eagle contingent consisted of Lee Maxwell (76-75=151), Travis Ramsey (75-78=153) and Tyler Cassetty (78-76=154).
Appalachian State won the tournament, edging top-25-ranked UAB by two strokes, finishing with a 292-273=565. The second-place Blazers finished at 567, followed by Monday's leader Gardner-Webb in third at 573. The rest of the field was made up of Vanderbilt (574), Francis Marion (581), Furman (583), Jacksonville (585), Samford (586), Western Carolina (586), Tennessee Tech (591), Wofford (592), Radford (592), Guilford (594), IPFW (596), Elon (596) and High Point (597) and Colgate (611).
Gardner-Webb's Kristopher Gray captured the individual title, adding a second-round 68 to Monday's 67 and finishing seven-below par at 135.
The tournament was hosted by Western Carolina at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley, which played to a par 71 and a yardage of 6,171.
