Gold team goes undefeated in the first week of baseball's Purple and Gold Series
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- A late game rally kicked off by a three-run inning in the top of the seventh gave the Gold team a 4-1 win, securing their 2-0 hold on the Purple and Gold Series at the end of week one.
Three walks in the top of the seventh loaded the bases for the Gold team, and a passed ball brought in Frankie Beech for the would-be winning run for his team on Thursday evening. Redshirt freshman Will Thomas and senior Casanova Donaldson followed up with RBI singles to cap off the three-run inning, giving the Gold the edge in the five-game series.
The Gold led the game from the get-go after a walk and an error put two men on base and a sacrifice fly scored Zephan Guyear to give the Gold an early 1-0 lead.
Purple bats tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when senior standout Chad Oberacker doubled to right field, scoring Austin Wulf, but couldn't gather momentum after the crushing seventh inning.
Donaldson went 2-for-4 on the day for the Gold Team, contributing one RBI, while Will Thomas went 1-for-3 with his first RBI of fall ball.
Oberacker's hit was the solo shot for the Purple team; the center fielder went 1-for-2 on the evening.
The two teams will continue the series next week, facing off on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 4 p.m. each day.
