Former Tennessee Tech President inducted into OVC Hall of Fame

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A large group from Tennessee Tech and Cookeville was in the audience Friday when former Tennessee Tech President Dr. Robert “Bob” Bell was inducted into the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame at the 2014 Honors Luncheon at DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Nashville.

The league handed out its annual awards, including the induction of Bell and Margaret Simmons into the Hall of Fame.

“I’m honored to be inducted into the Hall of Fame,” said Bell. “This is such an outstanding conference and it’s just a honor to be apart of this group of individuals who have done so much for intercollegiate athletics and for our student-athletes.”

Bell became the 18th Tennessee Tech affiliate into the Hall of Fame.

Rudy Kalis, sports director for WSMV TV in Nashville, served as the emcee for the event. 

 Awards for Male and Female Athlete of the Year, the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award, sportsmanship awards and the Commissioner’s Cup were presented. 

The following awards were given out at the luncheon:

Male Athlete of the Year: Jimmy Garoppolo, Eastern Illinois  

Female Athlete of the Year: Heather Butler, UT Martin

Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award: J.J. Mann, Belmont

Commissioner's Cup: Eastern Kentucky

Institutional Sportsmanship: Belmont University

Hall of Fame: Dr. Robert "Bob" Bell, Tennessee Tech; Margaret Simmons, Murray State
